Project Summary

This project is a video-based demo reel that promotes my design and technical skill for the Interactive Media Design industry. The reel includes pieces of previously completed work. There are multiple different tools used, for example, 3D, motion, and imaging.

The Problem

I need to find a way to display my work smoothly and elegantly. The video needs to be catching and eye-pleasing enough for viewers to watch the whole way through. I need to give them the impression that I am well-versed in compositing and creating motion graphics.

The Solution

I compiled all of my past works into Adobe Effects and allocated each project into its composition so that they are easily manipulated. All non-motion graphic projects need to be screen recorded, and motion graphic projects need to be trimmed to meet the requirement of two minutes.

The Process

Demo Reel Intro

To get the effect that continually changes the Demo Reel text, I made changes to the character offset. To get the text of my name to write out, I placed a shape layer above the text layer and used trim paths to make the necessary adjustments.

Infographic Featurette

Before working on this Infographic Featurette, I researched and compiled data about corn production in Canada. I inputted text, illustrations, animated graphs/pie charts, and essential data points with this use of motion tracking.

Rock Paper Scissors Game

This project was created with the use of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I used trim paths on the shape layer in two separate compositions to create the white lines surrounding the text in the intro. To form each part of the game text, I used track mattes to carve portions of each layer to expose the layer beneath it. It was done along with the use of position transforming. I used an alpha matte and a scaling transformation to create the rock paper scissors in the centre of the game text.

Recipe Website

This project also was initially created with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. To create the 3D text, I used transformations on the y-axis and general positioning for moving the text. To give the text a 3D-look to it, I changed the bevel style, bevel depth, and extrusion depth. I used the spotlight layer to help brighten the text, which sits over a black shape layer. I created the black-shape layer to have a higher contrast between the text and video. I used the camera layer to animate the text better.

Restaurant Web App Design

When creating this clip, I created a fire effect and a shape layer as a mask to give a wrapper throw away effect to display my three restaurant designs. For when the app designs drop down into the screen, I used position transformations and motion blur.

Lakeridge Infographic Videos

These videos were planned and produced by my colleagues and me at Durham College for Lakeridge Health. To display the videos in the demo reel, I used position transformations and motion blur for both the text and the videos.

The Results

The combination of materials, tools, and effort used made the Demo Reel a worthwhile project to produce.
